Emotional Courage

While we aren’t confronted with life and death situations very often, Brené Brown, a research professor at University of Houston who specializes in the study of vulnerability and courage, believes that at the heart of courage is the willingness to be vulnerable. In The Call to Courage, she says this includes being willing “…to ask for what you need… to talk about how you’re feeling… to have the hard conversations.” It takes courage to tell a friend or loved one a hard truth, or to admit that you made a serious mistake, or to speak up for what you think is right even when you think you stand alone.

There's the story of the journalist who said to a famous bullfighter, "You have so much courage! It must be great not to feel fear!", to which the bullfighter said, “I am not fearless. To fight a bull without fear is dangerous and stupid. And to not fight a bull because you have fear is nothing. But to fight a bull with fear — that is something!”

And there’s still another kind of courage, the courage to stand face-to-face with our thoughts and feelings and sensations, seeing them just as they are, without either sugar-coating them or banishing them. This is the type of courage we try to teach in Palouse Mindfulness, acknowledging thoughts, feelings, images, sensations without being swept away by them or pushing them away. Susan David's video, The Gift of Emotional Courage, speaks powerfully to this. She talks about the possibility of usingemotions rather than being used by emotions, an alternative to being overwhelmed by them (which she calls brooding), banishing them (she calls bottling), or sugar-coating them (she calls forced positivity). In the video you’ll see, she describes a way to meet them squarely, but using emotions as data, as information, not as commands.

Emotional courage is the willingness to feel. And it’s the driving force behind anything important that we accomplish.

Here’s an example - think about a difficult conversation you want to have with someone but you haven’t followed through on. Now consider why you haven’t followed through. I’m betting you know what you want to say. And that you’re skilled enough to have the conversation. And I imagine you’ve had - or could have created - opportunities to have the conversation. So why haven’t you followed through?

That’s where emotional courage comes in. There’s something you don’t want to feel. Maybe it’s the possibility of conflict. Or the other person’s defensiveness. Or their anger. Or your own anger or defensiveness. I’m not sure what it is that you might have to feel - but the risk of feeling it stops you. It stops all of us. That’s why emotional courage is so important to following through on what we care most about.

If we are willing to feel everything, we can do anything.

Here’s the truth: It doesn’t matter whether you want to be emotional [at work] - you simply are emotional. It’s impossible not to have hundreds of emotions pass through us in a regular workday. Try to spend three minutes during the day and not have an emotion. At any moment we may feel happy, frustrated, angry, jealous, wistful, sad, scared, excited, bored, inspired, and so much more. That’s what it means to be a human being. When we try to stuff those emotions down, that’s when we become unreliable, unpredictable. The emotions we don’t want to feel are the ones that get in our way because they leak out, often in passive aggressive, insidious ways.

So, yes, I am suggesting that we feel, watch, and pay attention to our emotions. But feeling angry and expressing our anger are two different things. Feel everything. And then be strategic and intentional about what you express and how you express it to achieve the outcomes you want.

The first time I read this quote by Theodore Roosevelt (above), I thought, this is vulnerability. Everything I’ve learned from over a decade of research on vulnerability has taught me this exact lesson. Vulnerability is not knowing victory or defeat, it’s understanding the necessity of both; it’s engaging. It’s being all in.

I think the first thing we have to do is figure out what’s keeping us out of the arena. What’s the fear? Where and why do we want to be braver? Then we have to figure out how we’re currently protecting ourselves from vulnerability. What is our armor? Perfectionism? Intellectualizing? Cynicism? Numbing? Control? That’s where I started. It’s not an easy walk into that arena, but it’s where we come alive.

A friend was telling me about her elderly parents in Florida. They live in an area where there’s poverty and hardship; the threat of violence seems very real. Their way of relating to this is to live in a walled community protected by guard dogs and electric gates. It is their hope, of course, that nothing scary will enter. Unfortunately, my friend’s parents are becoming more and more afraid to go outside those walls. They want to go to the beach or the golf course, but they’re too scared to budge. Even though they now pay someone to do their shopping, the feeling of insecurity is getting stronger. Lately they’ve become paranoid even about those who are allowed through the gates: the people who fix broken appliances, the gardeners, the plumbers, and the electricians. Through their isolation, they are becoming unable to cope with an unpredictable world….

As Albert Einstein pointed out (see quote below), the tragedy of experiencing ourselves as apart from everyone else is that this delusion becomes a prison. Sadder yet, we become increasingly unnerved at the possibility of freedom... Finding the courage to go to the places that scare us cannot happen without compassionate inquiry...
