The Palouse MBSR course was my first experience with meditation and mindfulness, and profoundly changed my understanding of myself and the way I live day to day. This deep change did not happen right away though. When I came to the Palouse course, I was looking for relief from both physical and mental pain and stress and at first I was quite resistant: ‘I’m in pain, I don’t want to do a Body Scan!” “Turning towards difficult emotions? Nope!”

But one night as I was doing the Sitting Meditation (while constantly peeking at the clock) I discovered that during the last minute or so something amazing happened - “I” was gone! My mind had found that state of ‘simply being’ described in that meditation - a profound, letting go of my sense of self and all the stress and baggage it carries around. Never had I experienced such tranquility and openness. My goal ever since has been to understand this state of being, learn how to still the mind in order to sustain it during meditation, and explore how to bring it into my daily life. I love to share this exploration with fellow Palouse students in my Zoom sessions, where we practice cultivating a calm and peaceful mind and see where that takes us.
