I feel so grateful to be able to give back to the Palouse MBSR program. After a lifetime of spiritual and meditative inquiry this MBSR program was truly the scaffolding I had searched to hang all these investigations on. This program gifted me the big outline to understand what I was looking for; a structure I was trying unsuccessfully to build myself.
I began mindfulness experimentation when my mother took my brother and I to TM (Transcendental Meditation) classes when I was 16. I practiced that for many years, using a mantra to meditate twice daily for 20 minutes. It helped calm me I think, but still I searched. I attended another mindfulness course about 20 years ago and was taken with the huge new landscape of meditation I was introduced to. But, this was a strict interpretation of practice. I was discouraged because though I could see how valuable this could be for my life, I was always getting in trouble because I could not sit still.
I could access this flow state doing my art or exercising, but I wanted to engage in this other- mindedness more often. I found Palouse MBSR with a path all mapped out to study. I took 10 months to complete the program but I learned so much from all the references. I certainly discovered the more I learned and practiced the more I wanted to learn and practice.
I really love these meetings because we can ask questions about learning to practice.. Whether in the first “week” of the course or a graduate, we can always relate, and learn about mindfulness experiences from each other. Even though we come from different cultures from all over the world, at different stages of our lives, with different challenges we can relate to each other and belong to this community together.
Each of the hosts facilitate unique sessions, we all share from the MBSR perspective of awareness. The focus of my hours is offering a guided meditation, (mostly Lovingkindness), with stories from teachers, poetry and some pet stories thrown in. I am grateful to share and always gratified to see how we can empathize with each other, and discover our commonalities and learn from our differences. Oh, and please know you are welcome to sit, stand, jump, or dance ! Move any way you want!
