"Letter of Learning"
from Bonnie G. in Canada

It has been three years since I was first diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer and was given this website as a tool for social, emotional and physical support. Since starting I have been through the 8-week MBSR program at least 4 different times.

The first time took me a year and a half to get through. I listened to your YouTube videos, read the articles, meditated and talked with my counsellor who is an MBSR instructor all while having surgeries and undergoing chemo. It was here that I meditated “like my life depended on it”.

The second time was after my treatment when I followed my counsellor’s 8 week program with a wonderful group of people and received a certificate. This was during a period of profoundly difficult emotions that can be compared to PTSD.

The third, was again using this website with a friend during the pandemic along with joining John Kabat Zinn, Soren and a worldwide community via Zoom. This experience had left me motivated to make a difference in this world with mindfulness. I set a goal to graduate from the Palouse Mindfulness Program which meant finally adding journaling to my practice. I’m very glad I did. I guess the fourth time’s the charm. I feel more equipped to vocalize the strategies that the program offers.

I incorporate what I have learned from this program into all areas of my life. Before MBSR, my thoughts and emotions drove my life, connections and life experiences. Now I am better able to surf on life’s waters and drive my own boat. As a teacher, mediation has been incorporated into my classroom using a provincial wide mental health program called “Thrival Kits”. I would like guidance on how to become an instructor so that I can run an 8-week program with my fellow teachers.

Thank you for this program from the bottom of my heart. I look forward to being a part of the community of graduates.
